March 18, 2013
Advanced Process CMOS Integrated Circuit Will Enable Smaller 100G-and-Beyond Coherent Modules and Line Cards
News Highlights:
- Joint collaboration on advanced process CMOS Integrated Circuit (IC)
- Expands applications for widely deployed 100G long-haul solution
- New device to deliver enhanced scalability and flexibility for cost-effective transmission over fiber optic networks
ANAHEIM, Calif., March 18, 2013 – OFC/NFOEC Technical Conference 2013
NTT Electronics (NEL), a leading supplier of 100G coherent Digital Signal Processor (DSP) solutions to a variety of system/module manufacturers worldwide, and Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced a joint collaboration to deliver a low-power digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP will be used in next-generation 100G-and-beyond optical fiber communication systems.
The current generation 100G DSP will be further enhanced by the new device with the addition of features such as an integrated digital-to-analog converter (DAC/Tx), multiple modes of operation and lower power operation. These features are intended to ease bandwidth shortages in long-haul core and metropolitan networks caused by increasing traffic and data demands.
The next generation DSP will use an advanced CMOS process technology that reduces power consumption by more than 50 percent *1. The next generation DSP will utilize flexible modes of operation to provide sub-20W power consumption for operation in long-haul applications, while further reducing power consumption for metro applications. The lower power dissipation will allow use of this smarter DSP within smaller second generation coherent 100G modules, including a family of C form-factor pluggable (CFP) modules.
“We are excited to go a step further and partner with Broadcom to better serve our customers for maximizing the number of 100G ports per system.” said Haruhiko Ichino, NEL Vice President and General Manager of Electronics Device & Systems. “We expect this collaboration will initiate a more extensive partnership between Broadcom and NEL.”
“This new, low-power DSP will enable higher-density 100G metro and long-haul networks,” said Lorenzo Longo, Broadcom Vice President and General Manager of Physical Layer Products (PLP). “The combination of industry-leading DSP technology and Broadcom's advanced CMOS process technology and breadth of communications building blocks, including SerDes, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, provides a compelling solution. We look forward to collaborating with NEL on enabling economies of scale for mass deployment of 100G in metro and long-haul networks.”
